Just Another Day - Wednesday

But to start, let's talk a little about the benefits of creativity. First, creativity is not something you have or something you don't. It's a part of all of us. A part of what makes us healthy, human, and happy.

The pursuit of professional aspirations and the cultivation of mindfulness are big goals and worth setting dedicated time to achieve. But appreciating the beauty which surrounds us, the blessings which we already possess, and the magnificent world in which we exist, involve looking differently at the things we do and produce every day.

If you're sitting here thinking that your job doesn't allow you to be creative, I want you to take a moment to reflect on the last email you wrote, meeting you attended, job you finished, route you set, bike you fixed, or any other previous task you finished for work.

Did you blurt out what you wanted to say? Did you phrase a question in particular way? Did you have to problem-solve and find a new solution to a new problem?

When I used to work construction I learned you can never plan for all the problems you will face on the job site. You may get lucky and run into a problem which you have solved before, but most times there's something unexpected that comes up.

Now think about your own job, how many times have you had to discover an "out-of-the-box" solution to something that didn't go as planned? It may not have yielded a masterpiece painting, but you had to be creative to do it.

One of my good friends is a route setter at a climbing gym and practices creativity daily. The way he has to formulate a routes, the thought he puts into the shapes of the body, the level of difficulty a route may take to complete - each of these challenges pose a creative challenge of their own. A perfect example of creativity in movement.

In another one of my jobs I was a greeter for a store, similar to a Walmart greeter. In this job the goal is not to stand there and be a doormat, rather to greet people and make them feel welcome. It's about hospitality. So I tested and discovered ways to interact with people that felt fresh and new and made them excited to be there.

All of these are examples where creativity comes in to play. More than that, they're each examples where creativity is vital to being successful. All of this is to say creativity comes in many forms, can be executed in many different ways, and is vital for all of us regardless of what we do.

At Yudae we like to put a wellness focus on every day, and today, which happens to be Wednesday, we put the focus on Creative Wellness. Let this be your guide every week, and find time at least once a week to fully indulge in a creative outlet. Dedicate time to this creative pursuits for a couple of hours. It can be painting, writing, cooking, crafting, poetry, or any other activity, you not only allow yourself to recharge and refocus, but you train your brain to think outside the box.

For instance, when we make these podcasts, we don't just make them out of the blue. There is a process of discovering topics, relating them to our mission, doing research, and then practicing creative writing for both the downloadable PDF we give you, and the show notes which get posted to our blog. And that's all before we actually press record, edit, and create visuals like title cards, headers, and social media graphics.

Simple acts of creativity are shown to boost your self-esteem, provide a lasting sense of accomplishment and pride towards ones work, and even increase our appreciation for our surroundings.

So, whether you are an experienced artist or simply enjoy exploring new hobbies, make sure to carve out some time each week for your creative pursuits and allow yourself to bask in the beauty and joy they bring.

If you are listening to this through the Yudae app, feel free to send your coach a picture of what you make or do, or, if you’re confident enough, post it on social and give us a tag.

Can’t wait to see what you make.

Wellness is what we do, but it starts with you.
