Learn the 3 stages of burnout, the 3 signs of burnout, and 3 ways to combat burnout so it never happens again.

What is Burnout?

Many professionals struggle with maintaining a balance between their personal and professional lives. It is the result of physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion, often due to a gap between personal and professional life.

Burnout doesn't happen overnight though. Instead, it takes time and can happen over the course of weeks, months, or years. But when the effects are finally felt the result and be compromising for both your personal and professional life.

3 Stages of Burnout

Think of this as the early stage of burnout. This is where the negative effects are are less perceivable but negative habits begin to form. One may typically feel a sense of necessity to perform and deliver which overrides the ability to see what's coming.

This is where burnout can first be noticed, but the ability to push it to the side and ignore it is still there. Typically this is where motivation begins to waver and the work begins to require a higher degree of willpower and discipline.

Can be thought of as the peak of burnout. Things get really tough here, motivation is gone, discipline is left but even that feels hard. Everything feels difficult and the simple becomes complicated.

3 Warning Signs of Burnout

When the signs of burnout make a list longer than a CVS receipt, you might think it would be obvious. However, it can actually be very hard to see the signs within yourself. Let's think of this as an "overuse injury". My more athletically inclined likely know overuse injuries don't just happen overnight. Instead, they take time, sometimes months, maybe even years, and can leave you feeling as if there was no way to avoid it. Here are 3 sure-fire signs to detect burnout within yourself before it becomes a problem.

Sleeping is typically a great way to recover both physically and mentally. But not all sleep is created equal. Can you think of a time where you woke up feeling exhausted after sleeping for 8+ hours?

During REM sleep, the body becomes paralyzed, reducing motor function in order to prevent you from acting out your dreams. REM stands for Rapid-Eye-Movement and is one of the most important stage of sleep, responsible for memory consolidation, emotional regulation, and overall brain health.

Although it requires the least amount of time out of all the sleep stages, a lack of REM sleep can have negative effects on cognitive performance, mood, and overall health which may cause dissatisfaction and lower performance at work, ultimately leading to burnout.

All work requires focus, but focus isn't always there when we need or want it. When this happens during a burnout cycle this may be less obvious. You may still feel motivated and passionate about the work you're doing, yet for no obvious reason you just can't get your thoughts to focus in a singular direction.

Unlike not getting enough REM sleep, which directly affects your work and life, this is an early stage indicator of burnout. Because of this it can be much easier to "work through the pain". However, reconsidering your interpretation of focus may yield better long term rewards.

Motivation is more inconsistent than that one friend who never follows through but we love anyway because that's just how they are and they mean well. But just like that friend, motivation doesn't last. We've all experienced times of high and low motivation.

It's in the times of low motivation where discipline kicks into gear and we get it done even if we don't "feel like it". But even discipline cannot be relied on 100%. This is because no matter how much we want to feel we're the toughest most disciplined person in the room, our brains can only do so much. When your discipline begins to waver, this is a midlevel sign that burnout is starting to build and action needs to be taken.

3 Ways to Combat Burnout

I often get the asked "how do you cope with burnout?" and "how do you maintain such deep motivation?", to which the simple answer is, you won't have to fix what was never broken. For me, everything I do is for the long term, which means burnout has inevitable snuck up on me. What I learned are a few tools that help evaluate beginner, mid, and high level of burnout.

Sleep Tracking

Use a sleep tracker to wear to bed so you can use data insight to better improve your sleep.

"Hang Ten"

Complete 50 minutes of focused work then switch to 10 minutes of a mindfulness technique you enjoy. If you don't have one yet or are still discovering, try a Mindful Med session.

Reflect & Reevaluate

Taking time to reflect on the past is hugely beneficial. No matter if that is an hour, the day, last week, or the past year, find time to process what has happened. You may find this sets you in a new direction, or that you are required to make some hard decision.
