Background:

Endurance training is more than just distance and time—it’s a journey through self-awareness, mental clarity, and reconnection with nature. At Yudae Wellness, we’re redefining what it means to train by merging ancient athletic wisdom with modern methods. This article is a call to the modern-day athlete to remember the rituals that came before treadmills and apps.

There’s a growing hunger among athletes—not just to perform, but to feel more during their training. Many have hit a ceiling with traditional fitness methods and are searching for a deeper experience. We believe that rediscovering ancient, unconventional approaches to movement and endurance may be the key to unlocking a more powerful, connected version of ourselves.

My Endurance Awakening

My journey into endurance training has been as transformative as it has been unexpected. As a young company, we at Yudae Wellness have embraced the natural momentum of emerging outdoor running clubs—a trend that inspired us to develop Runner’s Reserve.

My own shift from structured, tech-heavy workouts to a more liberated training approach happened when I was in college back in 2017. My college, the University of Texas at Austin, was only 5 miles from beautiful Lady Bird Lake–which is where I often took my runs.

Running Wild, Thinking Free

A solo run through nature showed me that outdoor training unlocks mental clarity as much as physical results. It was on one of these runs through a wooded area and into an open field, where I realized that the simple act of training outdoors not only challenged my body but also captivated my mind.

Where Nature Guides You

Training at Lady Bird Lake wasn’t just about cardio; it was about connecting to my body’s rhythm with the world around me. I remember stopping and literally smelling the flowers. I looked around. The breeze felt beautiful and the sun felt warm. What I knew now that I didn't know then was running does more for the mind than the body alone.

Beyond the Body

I realized endurance isn’t just a test of strength—it’s a state of mind, enhanced by environment, intention, and breath. Research has proven even modest bouts of outdoor endurance exercise can lower stress hormones, boost overall vitality, and increase cognitive function. Additionally, using tools like this in conjunction with ancient techniques, such as micro-dosing, may offer enhanced benefits and insights into our own mind.

Ancient Techniques Resurface

The use of psychedelics, including psilocybin mushrooms, in ancient athletics is not well-documented, but various cultures incorporated psychoactive substances into their physical and spiritual practices, which likely had performance-enhancing or endurance-related benefits.

Many indigenous cultures worldwide have historically integrated psychedelic plants and fungi into rites of passage, hunting, and warrior traditions—activities that required both physical and mental endurance. While modern endurance athletes are beginning to explore psilocybin for its benefits, the idea of using psychedelics to sharpen focus, reduce pain, and increase stamina is likely rooted in much older traditions.

Mesoamerican Psychedelic Culture

In ancient Mesoamerican cultures, such as the Aztecs and the Maya, psilocybin mushrooms were considered sacred and used in religious ceremonies, warfare preparations, and possibly endurance-based rituals. Warriors and runners, who played crucial roles in these civilizations, may have consumed them to enhance stamina, focus, and a sense of unity with their environment. Given the long-distance running traditions of the Tarahumara (Rarámuri) people of Mexico—who are known for their incredible endurance and also used plant-based stimulants—it is possible that similar psychedelic rituals were used by endurance athletes of the past.

Ancient Greek Psychedelic Culture

In ancient Greece, athletes training for the Olympic Games often followed strict regimens that included diet, herbs, and possibly psychoactive substances. The Eleusinian Mysteries, a secretive religious ritual practiced for nearly 2,000 years, involved a psychoactive drink called kykeon, which some researchers believe contained ergot-derived alkaloids (similar to LSD) or other psychedelic compounds. While there is no direct evidence that Greek athletes used psilocybin, the widespread use of mind-altering substances in religious and competitive settings suggests that similar practices could have been used to enhance performance, endurance, or mental resilience.

Endurance as a Luxury Experience

Analog Over Algorithm

Ditch the tech overload. Simple tools and natural settings offer richer, more consistent performance gains.

Science Meets Spirit

Microdosing, endurance, and nature-based exercise are being studied for their compounding effects on mood, neuroplasticity, and awareness.

Train with Intention

At Yudae, we don’t just exercise—we experience. With pop-up outdoor gyms and functional tools, training becomes an elevated ritual.

The future of endurance isn’t in more apps or machines—it’s in remembering how our ancestors moved, trained, and thrived. We’re not just running for speed anymore. We’re running for connection. To ourselves. To nature. To each other.

And this tribe? It’s growing.
